Switzerland – More to Love!

What comes to mind when you think about Switzerland; chocolate, cheese, skiing the Swiss Alps, or its iconic distinction as a peace loving neutral country?  Well Switzerland is all that and more. Not only is it a beloved and admired winter sports mecca but its natural wonder, history, people and progressive planning make it a top travel destination winter, spring, summer and fall.

No matter the season there are options for nightlife, art, culture, festivals and adventure. It is also known for world class shopping, spa and relaxation, picturesque views and gourmet dishes of German, French and Italian roots.

Snow capped mountains and glaciers are the quintessential view of Switzerland for many. Stroll along the beautiful lake promenades found in each corner of the country. Lugano, in the canton of Ticino, is known for its lake shore, city strolling and distinct Mediterranean flare. Take a lake cruise to the Brissago Islands to peruse the botanical gardens and see the early spring blooms.

Some of the most popular events are the Montreux Jazz Festival and Omega European Masters held in July and the Lucerne Festival in August-September. Switzerland is also a popular destination for river cruises.  In particular Basel, on the Rhine River, is a popular starting and ending point.

Switzerland abounds with fine vineyards most notably in the Lavaux Region overlooking Lake Geneva. Vineyard tours and tastings are a must when visiting, especially during the fall harvest. Hiking the mountains and valleys of areas such as Graubunden and Ruinaulta, the Swiss Grand Canyon, is simply inspirational. No matter the time of year a train ride on one of Switzerland’s scenic routes (Bernina Express, Glacier Express, Golden Pass or Wilhelm Tell Express is a feast for the eyes.

Look for the “Families Welcome” seal indicating the establishment offers services such as play areas and organized activities.  For the lovers of history there are also 11 UNESCO designated World Heritage Sites throughout the country including the entire old town of Bern with its labyrinth of medieval arcades.
